Broadly there are two types of knowledge -
General Knowledge
Specific Types of Knowledge
General knowledge
On the basis of experience, general knowledge is of two types -
1. Perior knowledge
Prior knowledge is attained on the basis of wisdom. There is no need of experience for attaining this knowledge. This knowledge is non-empirical. It covers the daily routine facts, over traditions and cultural values etc.
2. Empirical or Posterior Knowledge
It is based on practical aspects of life. This knowledge is gained through sensory activities, experiences of life or an experiment. In this way, it is well said that 'senses are gateway of learning'.
Specific Types of Knowledge
This knowledge can be attained through different basis such as -
1. Testimony/Authoritative Knowledge
This knowledge is related with facts or events. This knowledge is definite. It is based on various principles which are universal and stable. This knowledge can also be got from books with the help of the teachers or any authoritative person.
2. Scientific Knowledge
This knowledge is based on scientific discoveries and inventions. It can be achieved by the researchers and scientists. We gain knowledge with experiments. The facts can be understood through reasoning power.
3. Empirical Knowledge
This knowledge can be attained through senses. This knowledge is also based on facts. This knowledge can also be felt.
4. Reasoning/Rational Knowledge
It helps to know the facts through imagination, views, thinking power and reasoning power. It is based on mental and intellectual process. This type of knowledge is also based on inductive and deductive method.
5. Pragmatic Knowledge
Pragmatic knowledge is based on practical aspects, views and beliefs. These sources fulfill the needs of human beings. It is based on experience, experiments and actions of one. It is very useful in one's adjustment in life.
6. Revealed Knowledge
This knowledge comes from divine sources and is communicated by the prophets. It is contained in religious books. This knowledge is classical and universal in nature. It is not subject to change.
7. Intuitive Knowledge
It is connected with inner conscious of human being. It is subjective and spontaneous in nature. It is neither related to senses nor to reason. It cannot be repeated by personal experiences nor can be verified scientifically.
